From Old to New – Sustainable Jewellery Design Honouring Tradition

Recycling is making its way into the world of jewellery as well. One of the key benefits of custom jewellery design is that pieces you no longer wear — or have inherited — don't need to be discarded. Instead, they can be transformed and given new life with environmentally conscious craftsmanship. From an old or heirloom piece, we can create something new and meaningful, to be worn with pride — while honouring the memory of loved ones.
Your Grandmother’s Ring, Reimagined in Your Style
Don’t let your jewellery sit in a drawer or safe — give it another chance! You can reuse just the materials (like gold) or the gemstones (if they’re in good condition). The colour of the old piece doesn’t have to define the new one: if your great-grandmother’s yellow gold ring isn’t your style, melt in some white or rose gold! The heirloom still carries meaning, but with a fresh spirit. A sentimental gemstone can also shine in a new setting — for example, with a rose gold mount.
A Personal Story
The necklace in the photo above was made for a client using diamonds from antique and unworn jewellery: some came from old earrings, others from a forgotten engagement ring or pendant. The stones varied in shape and size, so I designed a layout using "button" style settings to harmonise them. Since my client has long hair, she requested that I place the diamonds in the front third of the necklace — so they remain fully visible when worn.
More Benefits of Recycling
Recycling jewellery allows modern aesthetics to meet cherished memories — combining sustainability, heritage, and personal style. Even the smallest effort makes a powerful statement — not just for others, but for the planet. Our Earth provides us with natural treasures, and it's our responsibility to protect them. Overproduction and waste show disregard for the people working tirelessly in mining industries worldwide.
Did you know?
-
Extracting 10 grams of gold requires moving about 5 tons of rock.
-
Conveyor belts used in mining release diesel emissions.
-
Mining operations destroy rivers, forests, and mountains.
-
Recycled gold reduces all these environmental impacts.
How Does Jewellery Recycling Work?
During a personal consultation, we assess your piece together — checking whether the stones are suitable for re-setting and discussing your vision. I offer professional advice and we explore all design options. If needed, I provide a 3D visualisation — and if you love it, I craft your new jewel with care and precision.
Example: Emerald Necklace from Family Heirlooms
One beautiful example: a client commissioned a green emerald necklace for her mother, created from unused family jewellery. A meaningful gift reborn through sustainability.
