Our Favorite: Sapphire – An Ancient Gem for the Modern Age (Part 1)
May 15, 2025
Sapphire is an ancient gemstone that has never lost its beauty or value over the centuries. But what makes it one of LIKO Jewellery’s favorite stones? Keep reading!
Sri Lanka is one of the oldest sapphire sources in the world. This island in the Indian Ocean has perfected the art of gemstone mining. In ancient language, it was called “Rathna Deepa” – meaning “Island of Gems.”
The History of Sapphire
Ceylon sapphires are world-renowned for their exceptional quality. In my custom work, I’ve designed sapphire jewelry in many colors. Sapphire is one of the “Big Three” colored gemstones – alongside ruby and emerald – and holds a vital place in the world of fine jewelry.
Sapphire Colors and Types
When most people think of sapphire, they imagine a vivid blue. But sapphires naturally occur in a wide variety of colors: pink, peach, violet, yellow, orange, green, teal, colorless, and leuko sapphire.
Value and Rarity
Quality sapphires are most common up to 1 carat. Stones between 1 and 3 carats are rarer – and anything above 5 carats is exceptionally rare.
Thanks to exclusive sourcing connections, I have access to untreated sapphires, giving my clients truly rare, natural stones. I reject all artificial treatments like chemical enhancements, irradiation, or diffusion.
Sapphire Jewelry with Meaning
What I love most about sapphire is the ability to express tradition and emotion through jewelry design. Sapphires also pair beautifully with diamonds, often in one piece using mixed cutting styles.
